Extinction Rebellion

Does non-violent civil disobedience require non-destructive clause to be effective

While Extinction Rebellion is an initiative to be applauded, perhaps alongside the principles and value of "Using non-violent strategy and tactics as the most effective way to bring about change." it would be benficial to include a reference to constructive solutions.

As it is, the call to international rebellion that began on 15th April 2019, has been marred by the focus of the news on destructive militant action of a few.

Nearly all major news outlets in the UK focussed on the damage to the Shell buildings and completely diverted attention from the serious issues that extintction rebellion seeks to address

The Evening Standard led with "Climate change protesters smash glass and plaster Shell HQ with paint as they bring London to a standstill"

Sky News reported "In what was initially described as a non-violent act of resistance and rebellion, protesters blocked five central locations and demanding the government declares a climate emergency. However the demonstrations turned violent after windows were targeted at the Shell building in Lambeth, southeast London." So now a non-violent act of resistance and rebellion has 'turned violent'. This is what will be remembered.

The Daily Express had to shout "SMASH UP"

City A.M - Climate change protesters have 'attacked' the London base of Shell. All of this focusses negativity on the protest, rather than positivity of respect for life that is the demand of climate action.

Surprisingly the overall demonstrations were better reported by the Independent, BBC, ITV & The Sun, and The Gaurdian carries a good review, while opinion influenced reporting of George Mobiot gives a good overview, it remains that the protest will fail to impact the issues as focus will remain on the negative impact.
This is reflected in the Daily Mail article that leads with "Furious Londoners demand tougher police crackdown".

GFC holds the view that we must find the will to enact outside of civil, social and religious rules and laws to implement and promote the solutions. Presenting the non-violent promotion of solutions as opposed to protesting the problems.

Having said that, however you have to applaud Extinction Rebellion
